Bracka street history

Bracka Street in Cracow was known as Goldsmith Street. It had a convenient location, close to the Wawel royal castle. Place of living of the elders of the goldsmiths' guild, masters, and apprentices, incl. the famous Marcinek family. A well-known master of Cracow was Grzegorz Przybyło - a Renaissance man, patron of the arts, goldsmith, and a longtime senior of the goldsmiths' guild. In 1546 in Cracow, at Bracka Street, together with his wife Katarzyna, they purchased tenement house no. 243, currently no. 8.

Historia ulicy Brackiej

This tenement house was bequeathed to the goldsmiths' guild. The guild took it over in 1551 and from then on it was called the "goldsmith's house", "hereditary goldsmith's house" or "the tenement house of the Cracow Goldsmiths". The main tenement house together with the outbuilding ensured a steady profit and was a meeting spot for goldsmiths. It remained the property of the guild until 1804 when it was sold. The tenement house retained the "guild treasure", that is, documents, carved portraits of the founders, and the most valuable items testifying to the wealth, old traditions, and customs. In 1850, during the great fire of Cracow, the tenement house burned down and was rebuilt two years later in its present form. The last reconstruction took place in 1906-1908. In 1967, the building was entered into the register of monuments. Syncret Boutique is located in the tenement house at Bracka street no. 8 since 2017, thus continuing the old goldsmithing traditions.
