In the late 18th century, when London was illuminated by candlelight and oil lamps, jewellers shaped stones in a way that best reflected their natural beauty. Emeralds were particularly popular among them – the green treasures of South America, whose deep colour symbolised rebirth and hope.
This pendant in the form of a cross, made in accordance with the canons of Georgian jewellery, brings to mind both spiritual contemplation and the period’s love of decorative opulence. Each arm of the cross is decorated with emeralds cut into square plates – a method of processing typical of 18th-century gemstones, which emphasised their rich, green hue. Between them shine diamond rout – small, intricately faceted stones that sparkle in the light of the flame like the stars over London in the era of George III.
The reverse side of the pendant conceals hand-made, gold frames with delicate cutouts that allow light to penetrate the stones – a technique characteristic of the era when jewellers not only set gems but also sculpted light. The whole is crowned by a gold shackle, allowing it to be hung on a silk ribbon or a classic chain with belcher links, characteristic of jewellery from the end of the 18th century.
It is not only an object of religious symbolism, but also a testament to the craftsmanship of old goldsmiths, who were able to capture in metal and stones that which was fleeting – light, faith and mastery of craftsmanship.
