This exquisite cross pendant was created at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries – a period when European jewellery combined traditional symbolism with a growing love of detail and subtle stone techniques. Made of 0.585 gold, with diamonds set in silver, in accordance with the practice of the era, which aimed to bring out the cool glow of the stones.
The arms of the cross are decorated with rose-cut diamonds – characteristic of 18th and 19th century jewellery. This cut, less brilliant, but full of inner life, makes the stones seem to glow with a delicate candlelight. The diamonds are set in silver, which creates a visual contrast with the warm tone of the gold, emphasising the antique character of the item.
The simple form of the cross is based on slender, rectangular arms of equal width, which indicates a classic, almost austere elegance. The central stone – larger than the others – focuses the eye and acts as a compositional keystone. The ring-type pendant allows the cross to be worn on a thin chain or velvet ribbon, in keeping with old fashion.
Cross of this type were often given as family heirlooms, communion gifts or devotional items with a deep, personal meaning. Today, they are a testament to the craft of jewelry from over a century ago – combining material and emotional value.
