15K Gold, Diamond Ring with Old European Cuts, Late 19th Century

At the end of the 19th century – a time when conversations about aesthetics and morality filled English parlours, and the sound of horses’ hooves echoed through the streets of London – jewellery was created that today ranks among the rarest treasures for collectors.

This ring is crafted in 15-carat gold (0.614 fineness), a standard used almost exclusively in 19th-century Britain. Given both the gold alloy and the stylistic features of the piece, it is highly likely that the ring originates from England, most probably dating to the years 1885–1901 – the so-called Aesthetic Period, part of the late Victorian era.

Three old-cut diamonds – including both early brilliant cuts and Old Mine cuts – are vertically aligned, evoking the symbolic progression of time. Perhaps they were meant to represent past, present and future, or simply to create a sense of harmonious balance. Small accent stones nestled into decorative shoulder settings add a touch of lightness and refinement to the composition.

Of particular note is the combination of materials: a silver (to enhance the brilliance of the stones) over a warm gold shank – a typical 19th-century practice. The silver brightens the diamonds, while the gold ensures durability and comfort.
