19th-century silver brooch with natural coral
Description
In the second half of the 19th century, red coral was more than just an adornment. It was believed to calm the heart, ward off bad dreams, and protect travelers, which is why compositions were created in the jewelry workshops of Naples, Genoa, and Trieste where each bead had its own pulse.
This brooch looks as if it were crafted by hands that perfectly understood the nature of coral. A central, full cabochon forms the axis of the composition, around which the master goldsmith selected smaller, hand-cut corals with a slightly satin surface. The arrangement resembles a flower, not one from a garden, but from mythology: a treasure fished from the deep pocket of the Mediterranean Sea.
The silver base, now slightly tarnished, attests to the techniques of the era: soft-flame soldering, precise wirework, and a mounting method typical for jewelry worn on corsets and shawls. The whole piece retains its original energy, the warmth of a color that 19th-century ladies considered "alive," almost breathing.
It is a small object, but its structure evokes an era when jewelry was meant to protect as much as it adorned.
