Gold enameled pocket watch pendant, Austria-Hungary 1872 - 1902

In times when lavender-scented letters were still written and time was measured by the chiming of the town hall clock, objects were created that not only measured the passing minutes but also told stories. This pocket watch pendant is precisely one of those stories, a miniature of life from over a century ago, captured in gold and enamel.

Between golden leaves, an idyllic landscape unfolds, reminiscent of arcadian dreams from the late 19th century. One side of the case depicts a romantic genre scene: a young couple meets amidst greenery, with sheep at their feet, as if time did not exist. The other side shows a peaceful garden with a marble balustrade and lushly blooming bushes. Both compositions were hand-painted with enamel of exceptional depth, requiring not only artistic skill but also watchmaking precision to withstand the test of time.

The watch mechanism, though in good technical condition, no longer tells time. Today, it no longer serves a functional purpose, but a symbolic one: it becomes an amulet, a relic of everyday life that has long passed. Austro-Hungarian import hallmarks (visible on the inside of the case) confirm its authenticity and place it in the period 1872–1902.
