Gold brooch-pendant with Old Mine Cut diamonds, early 20th century.
Description
In the first half of the 20th century, when jewelry was still crafted in small workshops and every stone was set by the jeweler's hand, this brooch-pendant was created from 585 fine gold. Its heart is an Old Mine cut diamond, the ancestor of the modern brilliant cut.
The Old Mine cut can be recognized by its soft, square-rounded outline, high crown, and relatively small table. This cut originated in times when diamonds were worked by hand, by candlelight, and without modern machinery. As a result, light penetrates deeper into the stone, and reflecting off its uneven, slightly asymmetrical facets, it creates a warm, shimmering glow – less perfect, yet more romantic than the sharp brilliance of modern machine cuts.
The setting composition resembles a rosette of flowers, with each petal adorned with smaller diamonds in the same historic cut. The piece can be worn both as a brooch and a pendant, a popular solution in an era when a single ornament was meant to accompany its owner from afternoon tea to an evening party.
