Gold necklace with sapphire and diamonds, 1950s, Paris
Description
This pendant was created at a time when Parisian jewelry workshops eagerly embraced forms inspired by the movement, light, and energy of the post-war era. The 1950s saw a departure from strict geometry in favor of more sculptural, organic lines – and this fiery composition embodies exactly that character. Here, gold does not form a frame, but rather swirls around the stone as if in perpetual motion.
At its center is a tear-cut sapphire, a stone of deep, saturated color that transitions from cool cobalt to intense blue in the light. Its form is subtly highlighted by diamonds set in one of the gold ribbons – small but precisely chosen, they draw the eye towards the heart of the composition. This is a dialogue of light and color, so characteristic of Parisian design from that period.
The overall impression is one of lightness, almost floating on the chain, though the design reveals a high level of technical craftsmanship. This is jewelry from the second half of the 20th century, imbued with the spirit of an era of reconstruction, optimism, and a belief in the beauty of forms created by a master's hand.
