Gold curb chain ring, Mid-20th century
Description
There are forms that did not originate at the jeweler's bench but on the street—observed, processed, transferred to the world of jewelry. In the mid-20th century, heavy, rhythmic chain links ceased to be merely functional. They became a symbol of strength, modernity, sometimes even a certain audacity.
This ring repeats that motif, but instead of austerity, it introduces a play of light. Curb chain links are enclosed in a form that wraps around the finger like a fragment of a gold chain. Gently rounded surfaces open up to reveal a row of tiny brilliant-cut diamonds in eight-cut facets. These are stones with a subtle, shimmering glow, characteristic of jewelry from that period—more diffused than modern cuts, soft, almost powdery.
The juxtaposition of polished gold with diamond-set sections creates a contrast that changes with the movement of the hand. Each link works independently yet forms a cohesive, coherent structure—the precision of execution reveals the experience of a workshop that handled a bold form, yet one requiring perfectly balanced proportions.
This is a design that stems from a post-war fascination with industrial forms, but is tamed by jewelry precision and a love for detail. The result is a ring that does not feign delicacy—its character is built by its mass, rhythm, and the light hidden between the links.
