Tank gold ring with diamonds and rubies, 70s/80s, Italy
Description
In the Italian goldsmith workshops of the 1970s and 80s, there was a belief that metal should have its own character, not a perfectly smooth surface, but a texture resembling stone, brick, or an old stucco wall. This is why Florentine artisans so readily embraced 500-karat gold, whose deep tone and specific malleability gave jewelry a monumental, sculptural flair. It was in this spirit that this ring was created.
Its form, which our specialists have dubbed "Hills of Florence," immediately brings to mind the sight of the terraced slopes surrounding the city—irregular yet harmonious, forming a distinctive, undulating line. On these "terraces," the jeweler placed a row of rubies cut into narrow, calibrated squares, a thin band of red resembling a luminous line of rooftops that, at sunset, take on an intense, almost fiery hue.
Above and below the ruby axis, diamonds are set in white mountings, like tiny flickers of light reflecting off the windows of palazzi. It is this dialogical interplay between ruby and diamond, between red and the coolness of white, that creates a micro-landscape: a miniature panorama of a city that, at dusk, looks like a sparkling mosaic.
500-karat gold, so characteristic of Tuscan goldsmithing in the second half of the 20th century, gives the ring a softness of color and a specific weight, the same we feel when holding a well-polished, aged brick from a Renaissance façade.
This is jewelry that doesn't imitate classics. It reinterpreted them, in an Italian way, boldly and with a keen sense of material.
