Toi et Moi gold ring with diamonds and a pearl, early 20th century, Paris
Description
Toi et Moi (Fr. You and Me) is one of the most romantic ring styles, with a history dating back to the 18th century. It symbolizes the union of two people, with two stones set side by side representing two souls meeting in love. The most famous example of this design is the ring given by Napoleon Bonaparte to Joséphine de Beauharnais in 1796.
The presented piece was created in Paris in the first half of the 20th century, during the flourishing of the Edwardian style, also known as the Belle Époque era. Jewelry of this period was characterized by exceptional lightness of form, flowing lines, and subtle elegance, reflecting a fascination with light, finesse, and the then-modern jewelry techniques. Parisian workshops were among the most important centers of European jewelry at the time, setting standards for luxury and sophistication.
The ring is made of 750-purity gold and combines an old-cut diamond and a white pearl, a duo particularly valued in Edwardian jewelry. The diamond, long considered an indestructible stone, is an allegory of permanence and fidelity, while the pearl is associated with purity, harmony, and subtle, almost ethereal beauty. The combination of these two stones, set in a delicate, softly modeled setting, creates a composition full of finesse and emotional depth, perfectly reflecting the spirit of French jewelry from the early 20th century.
