Gold ring with old cut diamonds, Vienna, mid-20th century.
Description
There are jewelry compositions in which the eye does not stop at a single stone. It wanders. From one sparkle to another, along the soft line of the setting, following the rhythm of old cuts, along the delicately curved band of smaller diamonds, which binds the whole like an ornate ribbon on an evening gown. This Viennese ring was conceived precisely in this way, not as a single accent, but as a small architecture of light. Diamonds with old cuts give a more shimmering brilliance than modern ones: less "technical", but deeper, full of soft reflections and life visible with every movement of the hand.
The setting is made of 585 white gold, and the form itself fits very well into the aesthetic of the mid-20th century, when jewelers eagerly embraced winding, ribbon-like, and asymmetrical motifs, without abandoning the elegance inherited from earlier eras. The central band of smaller diamonds, enclosed in a subtly millegrain frame, organizes the composition and adds sophistication. This is jewelry from Vienna, embodying the character of a city that for decades enjoyed combining decorativeness with formal discipline, without coldness, but with a great sense of proportion.
