Old-cut diamond ring in gold. Poland, 1920-1931.
Description
Ring made of 583 hallmark yellow gold with a stone setting in silver, dated 1920–1931. It bears Polish assay marks from the period when the District Assay Office in Krakow was operating, which confirms its origin and period of creation.
The central diamond is set in a silver bezel setting, characteristic of jewelry from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries and the first decades of the 20th century. At that time, silver was often used for diamond settings – its bright color better highlighted the optical properties of the stones than yellow gold, and at the same time allowed for the precise execution of delicate details.
The stone has an old cut, typical for diamonds hand-cut before the popularization of modern brilliant proportions. Cuts of this type are characterized by a slightly higher crown, a smaller number of facets, and a softer, more dispersed play of light.
The form of the ring refers to Art Nouveau aesthetics, visible in the fluid, undulating line of the setting. The spiral motif surrounding the central stone creates a composition based on movement and asymmetry – a solution often found in jewelry inspired by natural, organic forms. Delicate decorations in the form of fine granulation and rhythmic incisions emphasize the handcrafted nature of the execution.
