Gold ring with an oval synthetic ruby, USSR
Description
In Soviet jewelry, color had meaning. Deep red symbolized strength, energy, and courage – so it's no surprise that synthetic rubies became one of the most recognizable stones of that era. This ring is a classic, refined example of them.
The centrally set oval synthetic ruby draws attention with its saturated, almost blood-red hue. The cut with clearly defined facets creates an intense play of light – the stone shimmers from dark wine to bright, raspberry reflections. This is a characteristic effect for laboratory rubies from that period: the purity of the structure allows the full richness of the color to emerge without natural inclusions.
The setting was made from 583 gold – an alloy typical for jewelry production in the USSR. The warm shade of gold harmonizes perfectly with the red of the stone. A wide, oval frame surrounds the ruby like a medallion, and a subtle, twisted ornament at its edge introduces a decorative detail that breaks the simplicity of the form. A slender, smooth band stabilizes the composition and gives it balanced proportions.
This model frequently appeared in the display cases of state jewelry salons in the 1970s and 1980s. Today, it is a testament to the aesthetics of the era – expressive, decisive, based on a strong color accent.
The ring can become a sentimental gift, jewelry with family history, or an alternative to a classic engagement ring – for someone who chooses an intense color and vintage character instead of a traditional diamond.
