Gold ring with rubies and brilliant-cut diamonds, first half of 20th century.
Description
In this composition, two worlds intertwine: the fiery glow of rubies and the cool light of antique diamonds, as if a goldsmith, working in a small workshop in the first decades of the 20th century, tried to capture the movement of a dance he had just seen outside a ballroom window. The delicate, winding line of the setting in 624 gold and silver immediately reveals the fascination with Art Nouveau: the softness, asymmetry, and organic rhythm of an era that rejected simple geometry in favor of forms inspired by nature.
Rubies, meticulously cut into calibrated shapes, form a line reminiscent of a glowing thread in fabric; above and below them, a trio of old-cut diamonds are set in silver, giving their light a subtly subdued, almost intimate character. It is a sparkle akin to that of gas lamps reflecting on wet cobblestones—delicate, enigmatic, inviting a prolonged gaze.
The entire piece bears the hallmarks of a goldsmith's handiwork, for whom every millimeter was as important as the facade's line was to Art Nouveau architects: fluid, vibrant, never accidental. This ring is a testament to an era when jewelry not only adorned but also engaged in its own dialogue with nature, light, and movement.
