Gold ring with ruby and diamonds, Italy, Alessandria, 1940s.
Description
This exceptionally decorative ring was created in Italy, in the Alessandria region, a renowned goldsmithing center. Made from high-karat gold, it exemplifies the craftsmanship typical of the Italian post-war jewelry school: full of expression, sensual in form, and boldly combining different types of stones and cuts.
A faceted oval-cut ruby, weighing over 2 carats, plays a central role in the composition. The stone captivates with its deep, cherry-red color and a subtle fire that reveals itself in natural light. Set in six prongs, it appears proud and stable, serving as a "host" for the accompanying diamonds.
The Italian design is distinguished not only by the presence of diamonds but also by the variety of their forms: round brilliant cut, marquise cut, baguette cut.
The asymmetrical form of the ring is an expression of modernist influences from the mid-20th century, a period when jewelers eagerly experimented with line, irregularity, and grandeur. Despite its rich decorativeness, the ring maintains excellent visual balance, its mass harmoniously distributed thanks to the graduated sizes and cuts of the stones.
Jewelry made in Alessandria from the period 1944–1968 is today among the sought-after items on the antique and vintage market, especially when it combines a rare stone (ruby over 2 ct), high standard of craftsmanship, and historical characteristics of Italian goldsmith workshop markings.
