Gold signet ring with two-tone agate, Prague 1872-1922
Description
In the goldsmiths' workshops of Prague at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, not only ornaments were created, but also insignia of status, personal, heraldic seals transformed into a form worn daily on the finger. This signet ring, made of 580 purity gold, bears traces of workshops operating within the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy during the period 1872–1922.
At the center is a two-tone agate, a stone whose natural layering allowed for the creation of an exceptionally contrasting intaglio. The coat of arms, though simplified, easily brings to mind the heraldic gems of the Szembek family; a clear outline of a goat in stride is visible, facing heraldically right, and above it, a noble crown adorning the shield, from which ostrich feathers emerge.
Such signet rings were not only a mark of family belonging but also a tool for daily use; the intaglio was used to imprint wax seals on correspondence. Today, it is not only a unique collector's item but also a tangible document of a bygone social order.
The gold surface has retained delicate micro-scratches, testament to over a hundred years of use, as if through these traces one could decipher the discrete signals of past decades. This subtle patina of authenticity has not been removed; it has been preserved as part of the object's identity.
