Gold signet ring with an old-cut diamond, 1960s/1980s, Warsaw
Description
In times when Warsaw, rebuilt from ashes, was becoming a modern capital, jewelry created in the capital's goldsmith workshops acquired features of monumental elegance. This signet ring is the epitome of post-war modernism – austere yet sophisticated, practical yet full of expression.
The central element is an impressive 1.40 ct diamond, a stone with a classic, old brilliant cut (the so-called old cut), whose facets catch light in a deep and calm way, typical for hand-cut stones before the era of modern proportions.
The setting, characteristic of the 1960s-80s, somewhat resembles a stylized crown or splayed scales: the stone is set deep, which emphasizes solidity and protects the diamond from damage. This approach is functional but also aesthetic, highlighting the stone's mass and emphasizing its presence.
The period 1963–1986 was a time when Polish goldsmithing operated with limited materials but a very strong design identity. Forms were simplified but not devoid of character. Jewelry was meant to be durable, utilitarian, and at the same time representative.
